Nous serions ravis de vous accueillir le samedi 18 avril 2026 de 10h à 14h au Trinity Long Room Hub Arts and Humanities Institute sur le campus du Trinity College Dublin pour le deuxième Beckett Brunch à Dublin.
Depuis plus de 15 ans, le Beckett Brunch – créé par Dúnlaith Bird à Paris – réunit toutes les personnes intéressées par l’œuvre de l’artiste irlandais pour participer à des conversations rafraîchissantes sur l’art. Nous espérons continuer à faire grandir cette communauté avec vous en avril, alors que nous célébrons le 120e anniversaire de Beckett autour de thé, café, croissants, scones et bretzels.
Et cette année est placée sous le signe des célébrations ! Il y a 100 ans, Beckett – alors étudiant en dernière année de langues modernes (français et italien) – est devenu boursier du Collège, après avoir réussi l’examen de la bourse de fondation. Suite à ce succès, Beckett a voyagé pour la première fois en France en août 1926, parcourant la Touraine à vélo pour améliorer son français et visiter l’écosystème littéraire fertile qui avait nourri la vie et l’œuvre des écrivains canoniques étudiés par Beckett à Trinity, tels que Pierre de Ronsard, François Rabelais, Joachim du Bellay, René Descartes, Alfred de Vigny ou Honoré de Balzac. Dix ans plus tard, en septembre 1936, Beckett a embarqué sur un navire à Cobh et a accosté quelques jours plus tard à Hambourg, point de départ d’un voyage d’un an à travers l’Allemagne, où il s’est immergé dans les cultures locales et a exploré avec enthousiasme la scène artistique allemande, ce qui lui a permis d’expérimenter directement la censure et la menace de l’autoritarisme.
Aujourd’hui, des fragments de ces expériences de voyage sont soigneusement conservés dans des archives, et ils vivent dans les œuvres qu’ils ont inspirées. Pour célébrer ces jalons dans la jeunesse de Beckett, nous porterons collectivement un regard rétrospectif sur ces premiers pèlerinages et errances continentales, et nous discuterons de la manière dont les archives beckettiennes, qu’elles soient institutionnelles ou personnelles, constituent des sols fertiles à partir desquels son écologie créative continue de s’étendre à travers le temps et l’espace. Nous écouterons des experts beckettiens, des archivistes, des bibliothécaires, des enseignants, des étudiants, des artistes et des voisins, et nous sommes également impatients de vous entendre.

We would be happy to welcome you on Saturday 18 April 2026 from 10 am to 2 pm at the Trinity Long Room Hub Arts and Humanities Institute on the Trinity College Dublin Campus for the second Beckett Brunch in Dublin. For more than 15 years, the Beckett Brunch – created by Dúnlaith Bird in Paris – has been gathering all people with an interest in the work of the Irish artist to partake in refreshing conversations on art. We hope to continue to grow this community with you in April, as we celebrate Beckett’s 120th birthday with tea, coffee, croissants, scones and pretzels.
And this year is all about celebrations! 100 years ago, Beckett – then a final-year student of modern languages (French and Italian) – became a College Scholar, after successfully passing the Foundation Scholarship examination. Upon this success, Beckett traveled to France for the first time in August 1926, cycling around the Touraine to improve his French and visit the fertile literary ecology that fostered the life and work of canonical writers Beckett studied in Trinity, such as Pierre de Ronsard, François Rabelais, Joachim du Bellay, René Descartes, Alfred de Vigny or Honoré de Balzac. Ten years later, in September 1936, Beckett boarded a ship in Cobh and docked a couple of days later in Hamburg, the starting point of a year long journey across Germany, where he immersed in local cultures and eagerly explored the German visual art scene, which led him to get a first-hand experience of censorship and the threat of authoritarianism. Today, fragments of those travel experiences are carefully preserved in archives, and they live in the works that they inspired.
To celebrate those landmarks in Beckett’s early life, we will collectively cast a retrospective glance at those early continental pilgrimages and wanderings, and we will discuss how Beckettian archives, whether institutional or personal, constitute fertile soils from which his creative ecology keeps expanding across time and space. We will hear from Beckettian experts, archivists, librarians, teachers, students, artists and neighbours, and we are eager to also hear from you.
This free online event is presented by the Trinity Centre for Beckett Studies and the Beckett Summer School in partnership with the Department of Drama, the Department of French, the French Embassy, the Goethe Institut, the Alliance française and the Trinity Long Room Hub.
